Group Theatre & MBT

Bengali culture is folk based culture. Therefore, folk contents are predominated in all forms of cultural inter exchange. Famous "Jathra" - the 3 side opened stage play with live music, for the commoners is the root of Bengali stage drama. "Jathra’’ was focused to historical and mythical folklore.

Transformation of bengali drama began with shifting of open air venue to auditorium. So did the content: Social and family conflicts along with love and romance started to enter as subjects. These type of social drama used to have realistic getup and huge set. And performers were amateurs without any proper knowledge of drama, stage, lights and technicalities: but were devotee to both dramas as literature and as play.

During mid-sixty’s stage drama turned professional: necessity of presentation style, subject of play and techniques of performances were felt. Organisors and Activists turned towards world literature and contemporary stage dramas around the globe. Intensive motivation and practice began. That was the begaining and at that point of time, modern stage drama/play was based at British Council.

But stage drama, which is popularly known as Group Theatre activities, was seen immediately after independence in 1971. A group of talented performers, play writers, technicians, stage managers and directors, came successful through their sincere and continuous efforts. And finally a permanent venue- Mohila Samity (Ladies Society) Auditorium was found. With a permanent venue, activities increased significantly from one or two groups to ten-fifteen groups, from one night in week performance to seven nights of week performance. A group of committed activists went for academic and higher studies, preferably at National School of Drama, Delhi, India and Film Institute at Pune, India.

Also intensive workshop covering all aspects of stage performance to enrich group theatre activities began at large and wider scale: experiments of script, presentation format and technicalities of set, light, sound and make-up began significantly. As a direct result, a group of promising young play writers and performers were born. So did emerge an audience group, who patronized through ticket purchasing.

Organisers and members of MBT are originally rooted with these group theatres in Bangladesh, wherein they were trained, educated and guided in all aspects of stage play. Basically MBT is inherent of bangladeshi group theatre activities here at Melbourne.
