Rater Atithi: Night Guest
‘Night Guest’ is a play by Uttpal Dutta, story of which was adopted from famous Agatha Cristee. Written and first staged in 1982 at Calcutta, India.
Play unmasks the ugly facets of successful social elites of all walks of life. Naked truth was deeply dirty that could not be possively narrated by a sound human being. Uttpal Dutta had spelled out these hidden truth through a mental asylum runaway, Azad Raihan. To condense the suspense deep, a hunted house on a remote island was selected as venue.
Social elites receives an anonymous invitation quoting ‘’ Truth will burst’’ to be guest at an old mansion. Aware of own dirty past, all decided to attend, not knowing who else may be other invitee. They come, one after another, Syed Arefin, a editor of a popular daily, accompanied by his wife Nilema Arefin, Noted novelist Sojol Shahajan, , business tycoon ‘Khamba’ Chowdhury, Home Minister Saidur Rahman, Social Worker Reba Chowdhury and God-father of prostitutes Talukder. All came to surprise to be escorted by male servant Abdul to an scary venue, which is deserted and far beyond reach of habitat.
Interestingly all of them where known and familiar with each other and while invitees wait for host, they began drinking and chating, boosting of their social importance. Their Hippocratic character commences to unfold. And when the host Azad Raihan walks in,climax begains.
By entering into conversation with Azad Raihan, all found that he was there, some where, some time in their life, who starts to reveal their dark past. Azad informs them that they are subject of his new publication ‘’Dissection’’. But what have they done wrong!!
Novelist Sojol, never ever had written any novel, all was Azad’s work, renamed and re-possessed against monthly salary. A syphilitic Sojol had numerous affairs and had infected many lovers. Reba Chowdhury, first fiancée of Azad, earned fortune by selling out international donations to have-not babies by misusing her capacity as social worker. Syed Arefin, editor embezzled public contributions to great cause, who also exploits his wife, Nileema, to procure business through sexual favours. Nileema is the only invitee who was made corrupt against own will. ‘’Khamba’’ Chowdhury just kills peoples for few bucks. And Minister’s only religion is money.
Maneuvers are launched to be forgiven: with lucrative financial, physical and professional offers. When everything fails, they all agree to Azad’s request for humble apology. Upon receiving, he writes letter to publisher ‘’ Time Group’’ to stop publication of the book. When they receive the letter, they change again into old bad element and tries to eliminate Azad. At the end, Azad was arrested by police, who reveals that Azad is a mental asylum runaway.
Invitees wish this as fairy tale ending but not. They found out publisher was not ‘’ Time Group’’ but someone else, who still possess the manuscript.
